Comfort and Style: How to Break in Loafers

If I every let my head down, it will be to admire my shoes

You’ve probably seen them on every influencer's feet and feed (little stupid word joke there for you) – a pair of black leather loafers. Whether you buy them at a more affordable price range at Zara, H&M, ASOS, or from a luxury brand such as Gucci or Saint Laurent, leather loafers can be a pain to break in.

Let’s cut to the chase here and just be honest: there isn’t really a way to make this process go any faster. Sure, there are articles on the internet that you can soak your Doc Martens in hot water and put them on, so you“mold” them to the shape of your feet, but does that work? I tried it once, and I only ended up with a mess in my bathroom and soaked feet.

The same goes for the blow-drying technique. It will only work on your shoes if it’s genuine leather (please don't blow-dry your synthetic loafers because you will end up damaging them), and to be very honest with you, I didn’t notice a big difference even with actual leather.

So…what can you do to break in your new loafers?

1.     Step by Step

Honestly, breaking in loafers takes a bit of patience. My best tip? No marathon on day one—no matter how excited you are to wear your new shoes. Wear them for a little while, around the house or on short trips, so the leather softens and gets used to your feet. And always bring a backup pair with you when you’re out. When your loafers start to pinch or get uncomfortable, switch them out and give your feet a break. Trust me, no matter how fancy or expensive your shoes are, your feet can still get blisters in the beginning. Taking it slow and easy really helps you avoid that painful “new shoe” feeling and makes wearing them way more enjoyable.

2.     Socks Are Your Best Friend

Let’s be real—socks can make or break your loafer experience, especially when you’re breaking them in. You’ve probably noticed your favorite influencers rocking padded white socks with their loafers, and it’s not just for style (though it definitely looks nice). Wearing thick, cushioned socks creates a soft barrier between your feet and the stiff leather, helping to prevent rubbing and those dreaded blisters.

Plus, they add a little extra comfort during those first few wears when your shoes are still finding their shape. Even if you want to go sockless eventually, I recommend keeping socks close by while you’re breaking them in.

3.     Blister Stick

I’ve been a Doc Martens girly for at least 20 years, so trust me when I say there are no shortcuts when it comes to breaking in boots or loafers. However, what has helped me make this process easier is Compeed Anti-Blister Stick. You simply apply the gel formula onto your feet, and it instantly reduces rubbing on the skin to help prevent blisters from forming.

Want to know how to break in Doc Martens? I’ve got you covered.

I know it’s a pain when you buy loafers at first, and you’re probably thinking to yourself, "Did I make the right decision buying those loafers?”. Don’t worry. Quality loafers will last you a long time and will not go out of style anytime soon. Break them in little by little; they will be your go-to footwear in no time.
