Le Sirenuse Review: Staying At Positano’s Most Iconic Hotel
“Italy is a dream that keeps returning for the rest of your life.”
Positano had been on my bucket list for years. Ever since Pinterest started flooding my feed with colorful cliffside buildings, crystal-clear water, striped umbrellas, and glamorous boat trips along the Amalfi Coast, I knew I wanted to see it for myself. Consider me influenced, I guess…
So when it finally came time to plan the trip, the very first question on my mind was where I should stay. I went down a full research rabbit hole through Google, Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok… honestly, everywhere. “Best hotels in Positano,” “Luxury hotels in Positano,” “Hotels with the best views in Positano” — I searched for all of them. I like to be prepared and definitely suffer from a bit of travel FOMO, so trust me when I say I compared pretty much every hotel possible before booking.
But one name kept showing up over and over again: Le Sirenuse. And honestly, it only took a few photos to understand why. The iconic pink façade, the pool terrace overlooking Positano, the bougainvillea-covered balconies… it’s one of those hotels that almost feels bigger than the destination itself.
The property originally started as the Sersale family’s private summer house before being transformed into a hotel in 1951. Over the decades, Le Sirenuse has become one of the most iconic luxury hotels in the world, known for its Amalfi Coast views, elegant interiors, and unmistakable atmosphere that people seem to romanticize all over the internet.
And I’m not going to lie, I immediately wanted to experience it for myself. The only thing standing in the way was the price. I tried talking myself out of it multiple times and spent far too long searching for alternatives online. But after reading review after review from people saying no other hotel in Positano quite compares, I eventually gave in and thought: you know what? Let’s just do it.
Was it worth it? I’ll tell you… Let’s cover a stay at Le Sirenuse from the location, to the rooms, the restaurants, and the amenities:
The Location
Le Sirenuse is located in the heart of Positano on the Amalfi Coast. The closest airport is Naples, so you’ll still need to travel for a short time to get there. We decided to book a car to pick us up from the airport as it was the easiest, most effortless option. It’s about a 1.5-hour drive and costs €170 per way, which is pricey. But considering you don’t need to pay for parking at the hotel, we decided it wasn’t worth the hassle to rent a car. Of course, this could be an option if you’re planning on touring the Amalfi coast. However, please remember the roads are pretty narrow and uphill, so if you’re not used to driving in Italy, be careful.
Once you arrive at Le Sirenuse, the view of Positano is incredible, and you’ll definitely see what everyone online was talking about. The view from the restaurant, the terrace, the pool, and even the rooms, is breathtaking. As I mentioned, the hotel is situated in the heart of Positano, so you can easily walk around and explore the small town and the beach. Also, if you’re planning a boat trip, the dock is only a 10-minute walk down from the hotel.
I’d like to add one thing: Positano is very crowded; however, you don’t notice that when you’re inside the hotel. The serenity you see in the pictures from the place does match the experience in person. If you’re looking for a bit of peace and quiet, this is your spot.
The Rooms
When you stay at a luxury hotel, one of the most important things is the room itself, right? Especially at a place like Le Sirenuse, where you’re paying just as much for the experience as for the location. Luckily, that’s definitely not something you have to worry about here. The hotel offers a wide range of room categories, from smaller cozy rooms to large suites with multiple bedrooms and terraces overlooking Positano.
During our stay, we booked the Classic Sea View Room. Compared to some of the larger room categories at the hotel, it is definitely on the smaller side, but honestly, for a couple of nights, we found it more than comfortable enough. And realistically, with views like these outside, you probably won’t spend that much time sitting in your room anyway.
The real highlight is definitely the balcony. Waking up to the view of Positano every morning honestly felt a little surreal. From the colorful buildings stacked against the cliffs to the sound of the sea below, it’s exactly the kind of Amalfi Coast scenery people dream about when booking a trip here. We ended up spending quite a bit of time out there, especially in the mornings.
The bathroom felt spacious and very luxurious, and the shower was excellent after long days walking around Positano’s steep streets. The only thing missing, at least in this room category, is a bathtub. Not a huge dealbreaker for me personally, but definitely worth mentioning considering the price point.
One thing worth keeping in mind, though, is that the room sits directly above the pool area, which means it can feel a little busy during the day. Personally, it didn’t bother us too much, but if you’re looking for complete privacy or a super quiet balcony experience, it’s probably something to be aware of before booking this room category.
The Restaurants
Le Sirenuse has two main restaurants on the property, La Sponda and Aldo’s, plus the pool bar if you’re counting cocktails and long lunches by the water. We ended up trying both restaurants during our stay, and honestly, I’d recommend doing the same because they each have a completely different atmosphere. And the good news is that you don’t actually have to stay at the hotel to experience them, since both restaurants also accept outside reservations.
Aldo’s feels a little more relaxed and open-air, with lots of seafood options like oysters, octopus, and sashimi. It’s the kind of place where you order champagne, share a few plates, and stay longer than planned while watching the lights of Positano slowly turn on around you. La Sponda, on the other hand, is definitely the more romantic and elegant option. The restaurant is famous for its candlelit atmosphere, and while luxury hotel restaurants can sometimes feel a bit formal or intimidating, that really wasn’t the case here. Both restaurants still felt surprisingly relaxed and welcoming, which honestly made the experience much more enjoyable.
La Sponda is also where breakfast is served in the mornings, and waking up to those panoramic Positano views while slowly drinking coffee honestly felt like one of the best parts of the stay. It’s one of those settings that somehow feels just as special during daylight as it does at dinner.
And then there’s the view. Especially at night, the atmosphere at Le Sirenuse is kind of ridiculous in the best possible way. Looking out over Positano with all the lights reflecting against the cliffs almost feels unreal, and it’s probably one of the reasons this hotel became so iconic in the first place.
One thing worth keeping in mind, though, is that food and drinks here are expensive. Very expensive. For example, an Aperol Spritz at the hotel was around €26 during our stay, while you’ll easily find one for closer to €10 down by the beach. That said, the quality, service, and overall experience do match the price point, so it never felt like we were paying purely for the name.
If you only have time for one restaurant, I’d personally choose based on the type of evening you want. La Sponda is perfect for a more romantic dinner experience, while Aldo’s feels a bit more lively and relaxed. Reservations are definitely recommended for both, especially during peak season, so I’d suggest booking them as early as possible through the concierge or directly on the hotel’s website.
Oh, and before I forget: if you’re sitting by the pool and debating which cocktail to order, get the Mora. Just trust me on this one.
The Amenities
As I mentioned earlier, Le Sirenuse has an outdoor pool overlooking Positano, and honestly, it’s probably one of the most photographed parts of the hotel for a reason. Seeing it in real life almost feels surreal because it looks exactly like the pictures you’ve probably already seen online a hundred times before booking. Between the striped loungers, the colorful buildings in the background, and the view over the Amalfi Coast, it really does feel incredibly special.
That said, I do have to mention one thing about the pool temperature. Even though the pool is technically heated, it still felt pretty cold during our stay. Personally, I didn’t mind too much since I’m from the Netherlands and am very used to colder temperatures and questionable weather conditions, but I definitely overheard multiple guests mentioning it to the staff while we were there. So if you’re someone who likes very warm pool water, especially outside of peak summer months, it’s probably something worth knowing beforehand.
The pool area itself can also get quite busy during the middle of the day, especially because many people come down mainly to enjoy the view and take photos. We personally enjoyed it most in the mornings when things felt a little quieter, and the whole hotel still had that calm early-morning atmosphere.
The hotel also has a small spa area with a sauna and steam room that guests can reserve privately for an hour. We visited Positano in May and had a bit of rain during our trip, so it actually ended up being the perfect excuse to spend some time there. Access to the spa facilities is included in the room rate, which I thought was a really nice touch considering how expensive the hotel already is. Treatments and massages are available as well, although those do come at an additional cost.
What to wear in Positano?
If you’ve ever looked up Positano on Instagram or Pinterest, you’ve probably noticed the exact same thing I did before my trip: women walking around in long linen dresses, lemon prints, oversized hats, and perfectly coordinated Amalfi Coast outfits. And honestly? It completely convinced me that I needed to dress a certain way before visiting. Since I don’t really own clothes in that style, I genuinely started stressing that I’d feel completely out of place if I didn’t pack the “right” outfits.
But here’s the thing I wish someone had told me before going: Positano does not have a dress code. At all. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Seriously.
Looking back, this probably should have been obvious to me, but somehow social media really makes it seem like everyone walks around dressed for a luxury resort campaign 24/7. In reality, the famous white linen and lemon-print dresses are mostly worn by tourists trying to lean into the whole Amalfi Coast aesthetic, which honestly makes complete sense because it’s fun. But you absolutely won’t stand out if you don’t dress like that.
During the day, you’ll see everything from beachwear and sandals to casual summer outfits and people walking around in oversized T-shirts after a boat trip. In the evenings, most people do dress up a little more for dinner, especially at nicer restaurants like La Sponda, but it still feels very relaxed compared to some other luxury destinations.
That said, if you do want to embrace the Positano aesthetic for a few days, this is honestly the perfect place to do it. There are countless boutiques throughout town selling beautiful linen pieces, sandals, colorful dresses, and handmade resortwear. I also saw a lot of people wearing brands like Reformation, so if you want to plan outfits beforehand, that’s probably a good place to start.
The Verdict
After seeing Le Sirenuse online for years, I honestly wondered whether any hotel could actually live up to that level of hype and expectation. But somehow, it really does. The views are incredible, the atmosphere feels special from the moment you walk in, and there’s a reason this hotel keeps showing up in pretty much every Amalfi Coast travel guide, Pinterest board, and luxury hotel roundup online.
What stood out to me most, though, was that, despite its reputation, the hotel never felt overly formal or intimidating. The staff were warm and organized, the food was excellent across the board, and the whole experience still felt relaxed rather than overly “luxury hotel” in a stiff way.
So, was it worth the price? Honestly, yes. If staying at Le Sirenuse has been on your bucket list and you can make it work financially, I do think it’s one of those hotels worth experiencing at least once. That said, if I booked again, I’d probably choose one of the higher room categories instead of the Classic Sea View Room. While I still really enjoyed our room, being directly above the pool area did make it a little noisier during the day than I expected.
Let’s quickly summarize my experience:
What I loved & what to know
What I loved
The views over Positano really are as beautiful as they are online
The atmosphere feels luxurious without being stiff or overly formal
The location makes it easy to walk around Positano
The food quality was excellent
Things to keep in mind
Food and drinks are very expensive, even for Amalfi Coast standards
The rooms can get noisy
The pool still felt pretty cold despite being heated
Not much to do
If I could plan the trip again now, I personally would’ve stayed around three days instead of five. For us, that would’ve been the perfect amount of time to enjoy the hotel, do a boat trip, spend a day at the beach, and properly explore Positano without feeling like we’d already seen most of the town.
Hope this was a bit helpful. If you have any more questions, you can always reach out to me here or on Instagram, and I’m more than happy to answer any of your questions.
