Shangri-La Le Touessrok Mauritius Review: What to Expect When Checking In

If you're planning a trip to Mauritius, there's a good chance Shangri-La Le Touessrok has already come up during your search. It's one of the island's best-known luxury resorts, famous for its private island, beautiful beaches, and location on the east coast of Mauritius.
We ended up booking Shangri-La Le Touessrok as the first hotel during our trip around the island. We'd stayed at Shangri-La hotels before, including Shangri-La Dubai and Shangri-La Paris, so we already had an idea of what to expect when it came to the service. Starting our Mauritius trip here felt like an easy choice.
Shangri-La Le Touessrok first opened in 1976 and was extensively renovated in 2015. Today, it's still one of the best-known luxury resorts in Mauritius, combining its long history with a much more modern feel.
In this review, I'll share my honest experience staying at Shangri-La Le Touessrok, from the rooms and restaurants to the private island, to help you decide whether it's the right hotel for your trip.
Here we go! Let’s determine if staying here is worth it while we cover all aspects of the hotel, from the rooms to the location:
The Location
Shangri-La Le Touessrok is located on the east coast of Mauritius, around a 50-minute drive from the airport. Since it's a little further from the airport, you can either arrange a hotel transfer or rent a car if you're planning to explore more of the island. Hotel transfers range from around $100 to $260 (MUR 4,100-11,000) depending on the vehicle, while a local taxi costs roughly $70 (MUR 3,500).
If you're comfortable driving, I'd definitely consider renting a car. Just keep in mind that Mauritius drives on the left-hand side of the road. Unlike the Seychelles, where many of the roads are steep, narrow, and winding, I found driving in Mauritius much easier than I expected. Looking back, I actually wish we'd rented a car ourselves, as it would've made exploring the island a lot easier.
Being on the east coast also means the beaches here tend to be less rocky and generally a little calmer, making them ideal if you're planning to spend most of your time by the water. The only trade-off is that you'll spend a bit more time getting to places like Port Louis and some of the attractions on the west coast.
The Rooms
Shangri-La Le Touessrok has a wide range of room categories, from spacious rooms for couples to multi-bedroom villas for families or larger groups. We stayed in the Coral Beachfront Suite, and it ended up being one of my favorite rooms of the entire trip.
Waking up here was probably my favorite part. I'd make a coffee, open the patio doors, and within a few steps I'd be standing on the beach, coffee still in hand, listening to the sound of the ocean. It's a pretty great way to start the day.
The suite itself is also incredibly spacious. There was more than enough room to spread out, a huge walk-in wardrobe, and a large bathroom that never felt cramped. I also preferred the outdoor space here over our room at One&Only Le Saint Géran. The patio felt much more private, with plenty of space between the neighboring rooms, so it never felt like people were constantly walking past or looking onto your terrace.
The Restaurant
The Shangri-La Le Touessrok offers a wide range of dining options, from fresh seafood to Asian dishes. For me, one of the highlights is the breakfast buffet, which is hands down one of the best I’ve ever experienced anywhere in the world. The spread is massive, with multiple stations offering cuisines from all over the globe, and everything tastes incredibly fresh. Trust me, it’s worth coming just to experience this breakfast!
And if you're in the mood for a laid-back lunch, head over to the private island, where there's a restaurant right on the beach. You can enjoy everything from pizza to fresh seafood, all paired with a refreshing tropical cocktail as you take in the stunning views. It’s the perfect spot to unwind while enjoying a delicious meal with your toes in the sand.
The Amenities
There's plenty to do at Shangri-La Le Touessrok, whether you want to spend your days relaxing or exploring more of Mauritius. You can head over to the private island, try different water sports like snorkeling and paddleboarding, or simply switch between the resort's different pools and beaches. There's even an adults-only pool if you're looking for somewhere a little quieter.
The resort can also help arrange boat trips, golf, and one of the island's most popular experiences: a helicopter flight over Mauritius' famous underwater waterfall. We actually thought we had plenty of time to book it because we were spending two weeks on the island. Turns out, we were completely wrong. By the time we looked into it, every flight during our stay was fully booked. So if a helicopter tour is on your Mauritius bucket list, learn from our mistake and book it before you arrive.
It's one of the few things we missed during our trip, and looking back, it's the one reservation I wish we'd made in advance.
The Verdict
Looking back at our trip around Mauritius, Shangri-La Le Touessrok is still one of my favorite stays on the island. The staff were some of the friendliest we came across during the trip, the breakfast was my favorite of all the hotels we stayed at, and I really liked having so many different restaurants, beaches, and activities to choose from. It's the kind of resort where you can easily spend a few days without feeling the need to leave.
If I had to point out a couple of downsides, it would be the location. It's a little further from both the airport and Port Louis, so you'll probably need a car or taxi if you're planning to explore the island. The restaurants are also on the expensive side, and I'd recommend making reservations in advance if there's somewhere specific you'd like to eat.
I'd especially recommend Shangri-La Le Touessrok if you're traveling as a family. Between the different pools, the private island, the activities, and even a 24-hour nurse on site, it's easy to see why so many families choose to stay here.
