Le Negresco Nice Review: The Iconic French Riviera Hotel
“Nice is the meeting point between the Mediterranean sea and the Alps. You can’t get a better location than that.”
Have you ever wandered through a place where every corner tells a story, and every detail whispers secrets of the past? That’s exactly what you’ll find at Le Negresco in Nice.
If you’ve ever driven along the famous Promenade des Anglais, chances are you’ve already noticed it. With its distinctive pink dome and grand Belle Époque façade, Le Negresco is almost impossible to miss as you make your way along Nice’s seafront. Standing along the Mediterranean since 1913, the hotel has welcomed royalty, artists, and celebrities for more than a century—including Queen Elizabeth II, Salvador Dalí, the Beatles, and Elizabeth Taylor. It quickly became a symbol of the Riviera’s glamorous golden age, when European aristocracy and Hollywood stars flocked to the Côte d’Azur.
The famous pink dome itself even has an interesting origin story. It was reportedly inspired by the shape of a bust worn by Catherine the Great of Russia, which gives the building its instantly recognizable silhouette along the Riviera.
Inside, the hotel feels almost like a living museum. The property houses an extraordinary private art collection with thousands of pieces spanning several centuries, from antique furniture and chandeliers to paintings and sculptures. Walking through the hotel, it feels like every room reveals another piece of history.
Le Negresco has long been considered one of the most iconic hotels on the French Riviera—and if you’re visiting Nice, I would say it’s a must-do experience. In fact, these days you can no longer simply walk in to look around without a reservation. So if you’ve ever been curious about what it’s like inside this legendary hotel, staying here is one of the best ways to truly experience it.
But is a stay at this iconic hotel worth the price tag? Let’s dive into the details and find out.
Here we go! Let’s determine if the stay was worth it while we cover all aspects of the hotel, from the rooms to the location:
The Location
As I already mentioned, Le Negresco is located right on the famous Promenade des Anglais, the iconic seafront boulevard that runs along the Mediterranean in Nice. With the beach directly across the street and the turquoise water just steps away, it’s hard to imagine a more classic Riviera setting.
From here, you can easily walk to many of Nice’s main attractions. The charming streets of the Old Town, the famous Cours Saleya market, and the colorful harbor area are all within walking distance, making it a great base for exploring the city. At the same time, the hotel sits slightly outside the busiest parts of town, which means the area still feels surprisingly relaxed.
Getting to Le Negresco is also pretty straightforward. If you’re driving, the A8 motorway will bring you into Nice quickly, and from there it’s an easy route to the seafront. Coming from Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, the hotel is only about a 20-minute drive away. Public transport is also convenient—the tram and several bus lines connect the airport and city center in under 30 minutes.
Now, if you’re thinking about parking, here’s a tip: the valet service is definitely worth considering. At €65 per day it’s a bit of a splurge, but it saves you the hassle of hunting for a parking spot in Nice’s busy streets. There’s also a nearby parking garage if you prefer to park yourself, though finding space around the Promenade can sometimes be a bit tricky.
The Rooms
The rooms at Le Negresco are spacious and have everything you need for a comfortable stay. Each room has its own unique character, and every floor has a different theme and style, which makes exploring the hotel a bit of an experience in itself.
The hotel offers two main room views: sea views and courtyard views. We opted for a courtyard view since we were only staying for one night and wanted to save a bit. However, I do have to say the view wasn’t particularly memorable—it’s not really a picturesque courtyard. If waking up to a beautiful sea view sounds like your kind of morning, it might be worth splurging on a sea view room.
We originally booked a Superior Room with a courtyard view, but were upgraded to a Deluxe Family Room upon arrival, which was a nice surprise. I had requested a potential upgrade through my membership with Leading Hotels of the World, which Le Negresco is part of, and it was great to see that it worked out.
These rooms are around 50 square meters, so space definitely wasn’t an issue. In fact—and I never thought I would say this about a hotel room—it almost felt a bit too big for the interior.
While the décor itself was beautiful and very much in line with the historic character of the hotel, there were quite a few open spaces without furniture, which made the room feel slightly unfinished in places. That said, since this is a family room, it probably makes sense that the extra space is meant for additional beds or fold-out furniture when staying with more guests.
The Restaurant
When dining at Le Negresco, there are plenty of options to choose from. First up, there’s Le Chantecler, the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant, where you can indulge in refined French cuisine in an elegant setting. If you’re in the mood for something a bit more relaxed, La Rotonde offers a classic brasserie-style experience with traditional French dishes.
La Rotonde is also where breakfast is served each morning, and it’s quite a special setting. The restaurant is designed to resemble a carousel, with colorful wooden horses and a playful Belle Époque atmosphere. This unique carousel-inspired interior is exactly what made La Rotonde famous over the years, and it has become one of the most recognizable spaces inside the hotel. Breakfast here is buffet-style, with everything you’d expect—from fresh pastries and bread to eggs, fruit, and all the classic breakfast options.
For drinks, the hotel’s Lounge Bar is perfect for sipping cocktails while enjoying live music and the impressive historic décor. Le Salon Blue is another elegant space where you can stop for breakfast, light bites, or afternoon tea. And of course, there’s La Plage, the hotel’s beach restaurant, where you can enjoy seafood and Mediterranean flavors right on the sand.
We decided to try La Plage, the hotel’s beach restaurant. The vibe was relaxed and laid-back, and the staff was friendly, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Dining right by the beach definitely adds something special to the evening. That said, while the atmosphere was fantastic, the food didn’t quite live up to the high price tag—though to be fair, Nice is known for being expensive. If you’re looking for a beachside dining experience with a relaxed Riviera atmosphere, La Plage is still a nice option, even if it’s a bit pricey.
The Amenities
Le Negresco has some great amenities that really let you relax in style. One of the best perks is their private beach, where you can rent a sunbed for €50 a day—perfect for soaking up the sun and enjoying those gorgeous Mediterranean views.
If you’re more of a spa person, the hotel also has a wellness area with spa facilities and an indoor pool where you can unwind and let go of any stress. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to visit the spa myself, as we were only staying for one night during our road trip through the south of France and had to continue on to our next stop: Belmond Hotel Splendido in Portofino.
The Verdict
Overall, Le Negresco is a truly unique experience, and the location is unbeatable—being so close to the beach is a huge plus. The moment you step into the main hall and see that stunning glass ceiling, you know you're in for something special. The art throughout the hotel is absolutely incredible, making your stay feel like a journey through a museum. The staff is friendly and always ready to help, which adds to the experience.
That said, the hotel is quite large, and you can definitely feel that vibe, so it doesn’t have a cozy, intimate atmosphere if that’s what you’re after. But for a weekend in Nice, if you want something truly one of a kind, I’d definitely recommend staying here. It’s an unforgettable blend of art, luxury, and history!
